The Unforeseen Apple Watch Feature That Changed My Perspective

Chapter 1: My Reluctant Journey with the Apple Watch
Initially, I was quite hesitant about purchasing the Apple Watch Series 7. My desire for a seamlessly integrated Apple ecosystem ultimately led me to give it a chance. However, as I wrapped up my previous article eight months ago, I still wasn't fully convinced of the watch's practicality and value. While time is known to heal all wounds, it also opens the door to learning and experimentation. I awaited a moment of revelation from Apple's timepiece, and it did come—just not in the manner I had anticipated.
Section 1.1: Overcoming My Hesitation
In a world filled with smartwatches, the Apple Watch can be a tough sell unless you're an ardent Apple devotee. Before diving into the main feature that has become essential in my everyday life, I want to mention a few other benefits and some minor annoyances that come with wearing the Apple Watch.
The Benefits:
- Unlocking my MacBook simply by wearing the watch may seem trivial, but once you experience this convenience, entering a password feels outdated.
- Controlling HomePod Minis from my wrist is especially helpful for managing music without shouting for Siri.
- The ability to Shazam songs is a delightful feature for a music lover like me.
- For those with smart home devices, controlling various rooms through the watch has proven handy.
- Waking up to alarms on my watch is much less jarring than the sound blaring from my phone.
The Downsides:
- The workout notifications can be bothersome, especially when it mistakenly counts my casual walks as exercise.
- Heart-rate monitoring, while generally accurate, has occasionally been triggered by loud concerts or stressful situations, leading to some amusing moments.
- Charging the watch every two days is less than ideal, especially for someone who prefers to wear it continuously.
Section 1.2: The Game-Changer: Apple Pay
However, the standout feature for me is undoubtedly Apple Pay and the Wallet app. This is what truly captivated me. I wish there was a way to disable all other functions and focus solely on telling the time and using the Apple Wallet, as this has become my primary use-case.
To provide some context, I grew up in a cash-centric society where cards were mainly used to withdraw money from ATMs. It took me nearly three decades to adapt to card usage for daily transactions. While this was a step forward, having to enter my PIN for every purchase was tedious. The advent of contactless payments improved matters, but only for smaller transactions.
Apple addressed this challenge first through the iPhone, but it often felt more cumbersome than simply using a physical card. The Apple Watch, however, simplifies the entire process. It transforms Apple Wallet from a novelty into a genuinely useful tool that enhances accessibility.
Now, regardless of the amount I’m paying, all I have to do is double-click a button on my watch and tap it against the payment terminal. No more worrying about worn-out cards or carrying them around. Apple Pay on the Apple Watch exemplifies effective hardware and software integration that provides real benefits to users. I still get surprised looks when I make contactless payments over $50, but that's the magic of the Apple Watch—it gives you superpowers.
