The Inspiring Journey of a Cable Technician: My Story
Written on
The Beginning of My Cable Career
This narrative recounts how I embarked on my journey as a cable technician with AT&T back in 2000. I distinctly remember my reluctance to work in a conventional office setting; I craved something different in my life.
One day, my mother came across a newspaper article indicating that AT&T was looking to train new cable technicians. Little did I know that this decision would lead to two life-changing events: meeting my partner, whom I’ve been with for 23 years, and starting a family with four sons. This opportunity paved the way for me to evolve into a technical specialist and leader in various roles, including my last position as a Global Technical Enablement Manager at Zoom.
The landscape of the industry was challenging, especially for women. We didn’t have GPS to navigate to our service routes for cable installations, VoIP telephony, or Internet services.
Training Challenges
What was the training process like? It was intense! I ended up with bruises from my elbow to my shoulder, and at one point, I nearly quit. We had to learn how to maneuver our Ford utility trucks, stocking them with coaxial cables like RG6 for short distances and RG11 for longer runs to homes. Essential tools included a 7/16th wrench and a PowerDb measuring device for checking signal strength. To participate in the training program, I had to be able to lift 40 lbs., which I managed!
If you're curious about the source of those bruises, picture a 5'1" woman trying to carry a 26-foot fiberglass ladder. Dropping the ladder onto my shoulder from a vertical position often resulted in it sliding down my arm instead. Eventually, my trainers agreed that due to my lower center of gravity, I should just let my arm slip through the rung for support!
In addition to technical skills, we were trained to scale utility poles using metal climbing gaffs. It was crucial to maintain a 45-degree angle when climbing and to ensure at least one foot had a solid grip. Safety belts and tools were mandatory as we dragged coaxial cables up the poles. Thankfully, I wasn't afraid of heights; I simply focused on not falling. However, during training, I witnessed someone fall, which was a sobering experience!
First Day on the Job
My first day as a cable technician involved orientation, where I met my new manager and team. I'll never forget my manager's question about why I wanted to pursue this physically demanding job. At that moment, I didn't articulate my answer, but I was seeking a new challenge and believed that despite the tough nature of the job, I would encounter many wonderful people along the way—which I certainly did!
The reality hit hard. On my first day, I received over ten service orders. To say I was exhausted, both physically and mentally, would be an understatement. I started my route during a winter blizzard and finished close to midnight, feeling cold and defeated. When I climbed a ladder to troubleshoot a cable TV service, I found myself in tears, questioning my choice. However, the gratitude from the customer reminded me of why I was there.
After returning home, I was so tired that my mother found me still dressed in my dirty work clothes, as we hadn't yet received proper uniforms from AT&T.
Transitioning Roles
I worked as a cable technician for nearly three years until I became pregnant with my first son. My journey continued at AT&T/Comcast as a TAC Support Representative, assisting with Internet services involving various DOCSIS modems for another three years. Following that, I spent about two years as an account QA billing representative, ensuring that customer accounts had the correct discounts and codes. In total, I dedicated seven years to the ISP sector.
Memorable Experiences
Throughout my time as a cable technician, I encountered both heartwarming and challenging moments. I vividly remember servicing the homes of elderly clients who simply wanted companionship. I frequently returned to visit these individuals, enjoying coffee and cookies while they shared stories from their past. It was heartbreaking to see how many of them were isolated from their families.
On the other hand, some homes were deceptively pleasant on the outside but messy on the inside, while others were sparsely furnished, with children running around in diapers. I also encountered families who spent their limited income on pay-per-view adult content, highlighting the stark realities of life.
There were also physical risks associated with the job. One incident stands out: after a home renovation, I was tasked with reinstalling services, only to be greeted at the door by a man pointing a shotgun at me. I immediately called dispatch for assistance; I had no intention of facing an angry customer alone!
Reflecting on My Journey
I truly miss the camaraderie among my colleagues during those years. We shared crazy weather moments, fun times, and difficult challenges. I can confidently say that this job provided countless authentic experiences. Many of my coworkers came from diverse backgrounds, including military and law enforcement, while some were retirees looking for excitement. I fondly recall the pranks we played on each other to relieve stress.
I have many more stories from my days as a cable technician, so stay tuned for further reflections on this incredible journey!
