Mastering the Art of Not Overthinking: A Guide for Students

Chapter 1: Understanding the Impact of Overthinking
I am composing this just ten hours after completing my GCSE French speaking exam. All the preparation and countless hours of study culminated in this moment…
…and I nailed it!
However, if you had witnessed me just two hours before the exam, you would have seen someone fraught with anxiety, spiraling into the depths of overthinking, conjuring up every possible worst-case scenario.
To some degree, this is beneficial. It’s wise to prepare for potential pitfalls and embrace a bit of apprehension. Nevertheless, one must not allow these thoughts to consume you, as that can lead to procrastination and hinder performance.
For anyone grappling with exam stress or caught in a cycle of overthinking, it's crucial to savor the present and not let worries about the future cloud your mind. The only time you should focus on what lies ahead is when you are setting goals or strategizing; both are constructive actions, while excessive worrying and self-doubt are detrimental.
Section 1.1: Techniques to Combat Overthinking
One effective method to curb overthinking is to practice controlled breathing: inhale for four seconds, hold for two, then exhale for six seconds. Repeat this cycle until you reach a state of calmness, centered in the now.
Subsection 1.1.1: Breathing Exercise
Section 1.2: Encouragement for Exam Takers
A brief message to those who are taking their GCSE MFL speaking exams this week or next: good luck! Don’t complicate things unnecessarily, practice coping strategies for any potential hiccups, and enjoy this exam format—it's one of the most relaxed assessments you’ll encounter.

As for everyone facing their GCSEs this season, remember that although the exam period stretches over a month, it will pass swiftly. Aim high and strive for those grade 9s. Stay resilient!
