Finding the Time to Embrace Your Writing Journey

Chapter 1: Embracing the Writing Challenge
Last November, I embarked on a bold mission: to compose a Medium article every single day for an entire month. While I didn't quite achieve that goal, I managed to write 24 articles—far more than I had ever accomplished before.
My aspiration has always been to transition into full-time freelance writing. However, I realized I needed to instill more structure and discipline in my routine and build a robust portfolio before reaching that point. It took several years of drafting, researching, and stepping out of my comfort zone before I initiated my Medium article challenge. This endeavor served as a valuable opportunity for practice, ultimately propelling me toward pitching and seeking paid writing gigs. Spoiler alert: it worked! Six months post-challenge, my dream became a reality.
I'm immensely grateful to be pursuing my passion, and the somewhat flexible routine of writing daily played a pivotal role in that journey. So, how did I manage to find the time?
Finding Your Focus
I committed to prioritizing my goals, which kept my determination strong and my motivation high, even when the results were slow to manifest. I understood that this was a lifelong journey, not a destination to reach and then abandon.
Making Sacrifices
One of the hardest aspects of building a career was learning to say no. I had to start cancelling plans that no longer inspired me and make tough choices about my social circle.
Using Available Resources
I didn't wait for the perfect moment at a laptop to begin writing. Instead, I utilized my phone's notes app or a simple notebook. If necessary, I scribbled ideas on napkins.
Communicating Priorities
I informed my partner, family, and friends that writing was a top priority for me. This open communication helped them understand my busyness and allowed them to support my journey.
Embracing Breaks
I recognized that taking breaks from writing was crucial for fostering creativity and recharging my energy. It's important not to feel guilty about taking a few days off; tomorrow is always another chance.
Reading for Inspiration
Every writer understands that reading is fundamental to improving one’s writing. During times I struggled to find my words, I turned to books instead, especially those related to my writing interests.
Experimenting with Time Management
Flexibility is essential; if a routine no longer suits your lifestyle, be prepared to adjust it. Experimenting with your schedule can lead to a more efficient writing practice.
This writing venture is the most courageous journey I've ever undertaken, and I’m eager to share more insights.
