Chapter 1: The Suitcase Encounter

The future often feels uncertain and somewhat vexing, prompting us to hesitate and delay our actions.

The tale begins about a week ago when my wife, startled, called out from an upstairs window.

She typically isn't dramatic, so I went to see what was amiss.

"What is that doing there?" she exclaimed, pointing to a medium-sized, metallic purple suitcase perched on the sidewalk across the street.

It was unattended, adorned with flight tags and baggage labels, standing out against the backdrop of continuous rain and gusty winds, making it seem like a forgotten piece of modern existence — a mystery awaiting resolution.

"What could it be doing there?" I echoed her inquiry. "It wasn't there when I returned home."

"Doesn't it look suspicious?" she replied, concerned.

Given that my wife runs a catering business at an airport, her caution was understandable.

Now, take a moment to consider: what would you do in such a situation?

Would you step outside to explore? Bold, yet slightly reckless, I think of her words.

Would you call the authorities? One can easily imagine how that would unfold.

Or would you choose to wait for someone else — perhaps a neighbor — to take the initiative? Safe, perhaps, but somewhat irresponsible. It's just a suitcase, after all.

The dilemma left us in a state of indecision.

It’s often risky to impose our perspectives onto the world, yet I suspect many of us adopt this default stance when faced with unexpected interruptions to our daily lives, whether we acknowledge it or not.

So, I opted for a shower, and by the time I finished, the suitcase seemed to have vanished.

Another win for procrastination.

"This experience with the suitcase reminded me of a lesson from a former mentor who would simply stash troublesome correspondence in a drawer and forget about them. I could see the relief wash over her face, and I felt it too.

But was there a hint of disappointment? As if she had expected something more… assertive from me.

Upon returning from our walk, we noticed the suitcase had vanished from beside the trash can, only to appear at the door of a nearby house.

At last, we thought, it had been returned to its rightful owner.

Some challenges can’t be sidestepped or brushed aside. Some monsters persist and follow us relentlessly.

In these cases, the only way forward is to confront them.

So next time, I plan to take decisive action — to metaphorically plunge a mythical dagger, or at least a kitchen knife, into the heart of the problem and eliminate the unwanted presence abandoned across the street.
