The Frustrating Rhythm of Screenwriting: A Journey of Waiting

Written on

The Pressure of Immediate Expectations

In the world of screenwriting, there's a constant tension: studios demand scripts urgently, yet the wait for feedback can stretch indefinitely.

After dedicating months to crafting a script, the urgency from the studio and producers is palpable. From day one, they’ve made it clear they want the draft as soon as possible. Our agents, fully aware of this urgency, frequently check in for updates. Adding to the pressure is the fact that a notable talent is interested in the project, but their commitment hinges on the quality of our draft.

With just over two months to complete the script, the writing process begins to feel like a race against time. Each passing week amplifies the urgency, as we churn out pages — first drafts, revisions, and even more revisions.

As the deadline looms, the anticipation grows. One last read-through turns into multiple final checks. Just a few more tweaks are needed to reduce the script to 109 pages. The cursor hovers over the Send button, and despite the temptation for one final review, the moment arrives to hit SEND.

And then… it’s out of our hands.

The whirlwind of creativity and decision-making culminates in a void of waiting. Every phone call and email ignites hope — is this the response?

It’s akin to driving a sports car at full speed, only to slam on the brakes and feel the abrupt halt. The script’s destiny is now controlled by others, leaving you feeling like a bystander on a lonely road, waiting for a sign of approval or rejection.

The Hollywood mantra of "hurry up and wait" exemplifies this maddening reality.
