A Transformative Running Experience After Conquering Cancer

Chapter 1: The Personal Fitness Journey

Each of us embarks on our unique fitness journey. This isn't just about engaging in sports; it's about participating in activities that enhance your health.

Some individuals prefer outdoor cycling, whether it’s mountain biking or road cycling. Others might choose to hit the gym for weightlifting or group fitness classes, which were significantly limited during the pandemic. There are also those who create their own home workout spaces. The possibilities are truly endless.

For me, my passion lies in hiking and running. My love for running ignited back in high school. It all began when I joined the track team as a freshman and discovered my talent for long-distance running. This led me to become a member of the cross-country team in my sophomore year.

Experiencing the rush of endorphins, commonly known as the "runner's high," became a delightful side effect of running. It also brought an unexpected sense of freedom into my life.

However, once I got married and became a mother, my running routine diminished. Balancing work, travel, and family commitments made it challenging to maintain my daily runs.

Despite this, I managed to carve out time for running at least three to four times a week. I found joy when my sons decided to join me in running; they were talented but didn't share the same passion I had.

I’ve been part of various running groups and have seen many friends forced to stop due to knee or hip problems. Some have even faced serious heart issues that led to them halting their running journey.

Having battled cancer multiple times, including a rare brain tumor, I always found my way back to running, albeit gradually each time. One of the most cherished memories was running a 5K with my sons just two weeks before my significant surgery in 2014, which coincidentally fell on my 49th birthday. They understood how vital running was to me.

I've expressed how running played a crucial role in helping me regain a sense of normalcy after my cancer treatments. The journey was far from easy with the surgeries and chemotherapy, but my mind was focused on running again.

Fortunately, running reignited my spirit.

Even in my mid-50s, running continues to be my primary activity. While I don’t run every day and have moved away from half-marathons and marathons, I've participated in them in the past. I run simply because I can and it brings me joy.

Life often requires us to adapt. It's essential to grant yourself grace and allow adequate recovery time after each run or workout. As we age, our bodies naturally take longer to recuperate, and it’s important to honor that.

Incorporating variety into your activities is beneficial. I include cross-training and practice yoga daily, which is essential whether I've run or not. Trail running is my preferred choice; being surrounded by nature and navigating softer terrains is gentler on my body compared to concrete paths.

If you're considering starting your own running journey, here are some helpful tips:

  1. Invest in Quality Running Shoes: It's wise to have your gait analyzed to determine whether you're a neutral runner or if your feet pronate. With numerous options available, seek advice from experienced runners or visit specialized running stores. The right shoes can significantly alleviate discomfort.
  2. Begin with a Run/Walk Approach: Don’t push yourself too hard initially; start with just a mile. Many abandon running due to overexertion early on. Use walking days to recover.
  3. Focus on Movement, Not Speed: The key is to keep moving, regardless of how fast you go. Progress comes one step at a time.
  4. Prioritize Stretching: Stretch your legs and hips before running to loosen your muscles, and remember to stretch afterward for recovery.
  5. Allow for Recovery Time: Avoid running every day; consider a schedule that allows for rest, such as every other day or every third day, based on your mileage.
  6. Make It a Habit: To see lasting changes, commit to your running routine for at least 30 days.

Embrace this lifestyle change; it's all part of your running journey.
