While some may argue that these layoffs are necessary, others suspect they stem from a fear of missing out (FOMO) or serve as a convenient justification for workforce reductions. Regardless of the rationale, those impacted must now piece together their careers anew.

In previous generations, loyalty to a single employer was celebrated as a virtue. My father, for instance, held his employer in high esteem long after his retirement, often reminding us that their support was what put food on our table. The bond of mutual respect between him and his employer was something I found inspiring.

However, in the tech industry, loyalty is often undervalued. Employers frequently encourage employees to leave, which is reflected in a budgetary item labeled "Attrition" that acknowledges voluntary departures as a cost-saving measure. Those who choose to change jobs often receive better compensation than their more loyal counterparts. This environment fosters a constant fear of layoffs, leading to a high-pressure atmosphere.

As I reflect on the relationships formed in the workplace, I realize that respect and admiration for one's employer can only develop when stability exists. But how can such relationships flourish when people are frequently laid off, forced to resign, or leave due to inadequate compensation?

When we spend a significant amount of time alongside like-minded individuals, it's natural to cultivate meaningful connections. Yet, the current job market's instability has diminished the chances of forming these bonds. Layoffs further exacerbate the situation, reducing employees to mere commodities that can be discarded to cut costs.

While we can't alter corporate practices regarding layoffs or employee attrition, individuals can control how they respond to these challenges. In uncertain times, the ability to adapt and pivot in one's career becomes crucial.

Once a job is lost, various factors come into play:

  • The breadth of their skills
  • Their professional network
  • Their relationships with former colleagues
  • Their commitment to revisiting foundational knowledge
  • Their determination to stay updated with industry advancements
  • Their financial readiness to cope with reduced income

Some of these attributes may come naturally, but mastering them all is often unrealistic. Nevertheless, after a layoff, it is vital to engage all these aspects. Typically, a brief period of mourning is all one can afford—regardless of how long they were employed—unless they are fortunate enough to receive generous severance pay and have their finances in order.

While navigating interviews and conversations can be challenging, giving up is not an option. Resilience is what will carry you through turbulent times and ultimately make you stronger.
