Navigating Family Business: My Journey After Graduation
Written on
Chapter 1: Choosing Family Over Convention
Right after graduation, I made the unconventional decision to join my family's enterprise, despite widespread skepticism. The belief that gaining experience elsewhere is essential often overshadows the unique insights one can gain from a family business.
After completing my Master's in Industrial Engineering, I turned down three lucrative job offers from well-known firms. Instead, I chose to immerse myself in Urania Group, a B2B manufacturing company generating eight figures in revenue. This decision was met with resistance, and I harbored fears of being confined to one organization for my entire career.
While I lacked a complete understanding of the ramifications of my choice, I opted to embrace the uncertainty. Before exploring opportunities in other companies, I felt it was crucial to grasp the intricacies of my family's business. As the saying goes, "You cannot command the kitchen of another chef."
People suggested I should gain experience outside before committing to the family business. Yet, there was a prevailing assumption that I would eventually join the company. I, however, was uncertain about this path and firmly believed that without a deep knowledge of our business, I would struggle to extract valuable lessons from other roles.
Fortunately, my instincts proved correct, as my involvement ultimately revitalized the company. By combining my understanding of the business with a fresh perspective, we successfully scaled operations.
In 2015, we acquired a partner's company that was on the brink of bankruptcy. Our management team struggled to pivot, but in 2018, I took the initiative to delve into the company's challenges. After years of effort, I turned it into a profitable venture. This achievement granted me credibility, which I leveraged to assist other companies.
Through my family's business, I began to manage additional enterprises. Although I wasn't initially passionate about this specific business, I recognized this as my advantage; my detachment allowed for objective decision-making.
Interests can shift over time. For instance, I strive to balance being a successful multi-passionate CEO while raising children and consistently writing.
