5 Essential Skills for Thriving in Self-Employment

Chapter 1: The Journey of Self-Employment
Reflecting on my journey as I mark my fourth year away from corporate life, I’ve pondered essential questions about self-employment: Who is it for? What skills are crucial? What do people often overlook?
During this time, I’ve learned several critical lessons (including the hard truth that business revenue doesn’t equate to personal income). Additionally, I’ve noticed persistent myths about self-employment, particularly the notion that only a specific personality type can thrive in this space.
Through my experience advising, coaching, and collaborating with numerous entrepreneurs, I’ve come to realize that success in self-employment does not hinge on high executive functioning skills or traits like extraversion. In fact, many successful entrepreneurs may not fit this mold at all.
So, what are the five essential skills that can lead to success in self-employment?
1. Embracing Imperfection
No amount of preparation will ever make you feel completely ready for the self-employment journey. It's an experience that teaches you as you go. Successful individuals are those who are willing to start as novices, make mistakes, and adapt repeatedly.
Clarity and mastery come from action; they emerge as you navigate your path. Over the past four years, I've navigated various roles, from Social Media Consultant to Brand Strategist, often abandoning plans that didn’t serve me. I once operated without a website or business cards but still managed to attract clients and sell products.
Your clients don’t expect perfection; they only need you to be a few steps ahead of them.
2. Cultivating Self-Awareness
Self-employment and personal growth go hand-in-hand. Taking full responsibility for your livelihood forces you to confront aspects of yourself you may prefer to ignore.
To truly steer your own destiny, be prepared to face your fears, past traumas, and unhelpful attachments. Self-awareness involves recognizing your strengths and weaknesses, understanding your motivations, and acknowledging your emotions.
This awareness serves as an invaluable business strategy, distinguishing those who struggle from those who view challenges as opportunities for growth. That’s why I dedicate a significant portion of my coaching to this aspect and developed the Unstoppable framework for aspiring self-employed individuals.
3. Tapping into Intuition
According to CB Insights, the primary reason new businesses fail is due to a lack of market need. During my time in startup circles, I often encountered entrepreneurs pitching unresearched and unnecessary ideas.
You don’t need an MBA or a prestigious accelerator to identify a viable business concept. Instead, you must tune into collective needs and understand potential customer behaviors. Empaths, for instance, often excel in business because they can resonate with others' experiences.
4. Harnessing Imagination
Intuition is merely the starting point; the next step is to envision various possibilities that fulfill unmet needs. Rigid realism can hinder your business growth, as it limits your competitive edge.
You won’t find a pre-made roadmap for success, and if someone offers you one, be cautious. You must create your own path. Imagination helped me avoid burnout by enabling me to devise a unique working system that no one had modeled for me.
As entrepreneur Derek Sivers stated, “When you create a company, you create a utopia. It’s where you can design your ideal world.”
5. Nurturing Curiosity
The unpredictable nature of self-employment mirrors the broader uncertainties of life. Taking control of your career means acknowledging the cycles of success and setbacks.
You won’t know how well your product will perform until you test it, nor can you predict how plans will unfold. Instead of worrying about the future, cultivate curiosity about what lies ahead.
Over time, this curiosity can evolve into passion. If you can embrace uncertainty where others fear to tread, that’s where the true magic happens.
As I embark on my fifth year in self-employment, I’m cheering you on in your journey!
