# Enhancing the WRC Experience: Thoughts from an Enthusiast

Chapter 1: The Enthusiast's Perspective
As someone who has recently developed an interest in Formula 1, I must admit that I'm not an expert on the World Rally Championship (WRC). However, my passion for cars fuels my desire for rallying to gain more traction, particularly in the United States. Part of my motivation stems from the lackluster excitement of NASCAR, but I also dream of seeing Ford introduce a Puma RS in America. With that in mind, here are some subjective observations I have regarding the WRC in 2022, along with potential solutions.
The role of the co-driver is undeniably fascinating in motorsport. They guide the driver on approach angles and speed, essentially serving as an advanced navigation system. While I don’t see an issue with the co-driver's duties, I believe the real challenge lies in the viewer experience. As a spectator, I find it difficult to remember not only the driver's name but also that of their co-driver. This might seem trivial, but one of the appealing aspects of Formula 1 is its straightforwardness. With just ten teams and twenty drivers, it’s easy to follow. In contrast, the WRC features four teams but over thirty drivers, creating a confusing landscape. I often struggle to distinguish between the drivers and their co-drivers, which detracts from my enjoyment of the sport.

From my novice perspective, the way stages are organized at various locations complicates the viewing experience. For someone like me, who simply wants to catch a few highlights throughout the week, the structure can be overwhelming. Formula 1 typically presents five key events over a race weekend: three practice sessions, one qualifying session, and one Grand Prix. While this may seem busy, it pales in comparison to the numerous stages in a rally, which can total up to 18 or even 20! The takeaway here is clear: simplicity is crucial for viewer engagement.

I genuinely believe the WRC is an exciting sport. The innovative hybrid technologies used in the cars are impressive, especially since they are based on production models like the Ford Fiesta and the upcoming Ford Puma. Although I haven't been a regular viewer, I would love to become one in the future. If the sport could implement significant changes to improve its format, I, along with countless others, would likely tune in more often.
