Embrace Carefreeness: Letting Go of Overthinking and Worry
Written on
Chapter 1: The Burden of Overthinking
We often find ourselves burdened by anxiety, particularly when we're prone to overthinking. I am someone who easily falls into the trap of worrying and tends to prioritize pleasing others. These characteristics lead to unnecessary distress, often over situations that never materialize.
Recently, I experienced a moment of panic at work. I was responsible for submitting a report and, distracted by other matters, I accidentally took it home instead of leaving it in the appropriate place. As someone who aims to please, I was overwhelmed with regret. It was late at night, and I debated whether to return to the office just to fix my oversight. My boss had specifically instructed me to leave the report where it belonged, so the thought of forgetting it made me anxious.
I began spiraling into "what if" scenarios:
- What if my boss checks the report directly?
- What if the report is urgently needed?
I contemplated confessing my mistake, but a more rational part of me intervened. It was late, and since no one had reached out regarding the report, I guessed that it had gone unnoticed. I figured that drawing attention to my error would be akin to a thief admitting guilt when no one is looking. Staying silent seemed like the wisest choice.
By morning, no one had mentioned anything, so I hastily placed the report down, hoping to avoid drawing any attention. Ultimately, everything turned out fine.
This incident served as a poignant reminder that I should strive to be more carefree, particularly regarding things outside my control. If I made a mistake, that was part of being human. Even if my boss discovered my error and reprimanded me, I realized that her reaction was not something I could dictate.
Throughout my life, I've encountered individuals who embody a carefree attitude. They follow their instincts without concern for how it might affect others. Initially, I perceived this behavior as selfishness. However, upon reflection, I recognized that they focus solely on the present without dwelling on past actions. Their simplicity leads to a happier existence.
Had I not checked my bag that night, I might have avoided the anxiety that consumed me. This experience taught me that in the future, I should simply let go and act as though I had forgotten, rather than allow worry to control my thoughts.
