Chapter 1: The Power of Confidence
In my experience, one of the most compelling narratives I’ve encountered revolves around a remarkable transformation in someone yearning for greater self-assurance.

I shared this story during my presentation on confidence enhancement for Medium Day 2024. The Impact of Positive Thinking
A few years ago, I was invited to address a local group of small business owners, focusing on how to elevate their visibility through effective communication. When I entered the room, it buzzed with activity and excitement. Perhaps it was the caffeine from breakfast or the crisp October air in New England, but the participants were clearly eager to engage!
During my talk, I laid out a series of actionable strategies designed to help them connect with a broader client base. These strategies encompassed crafting compelling speeches, selecting the right clientele, and tailoring their expertise to uncover speaking opportunities. The audience was vibrant and deeply committed to their success.
At one point, I offered the chance for anyone to receive immediate coaching on a visibility challenge they faced.
A well-dressed woman, likely in her late thirties, hesitantly raised her hand. Her name was Laura, and she revealed that she had recently completed a three-year certification in health coaching. Prior to that, she had worked as an administrator in healthcare, and after her children began school, she pursued her training.
When I asked Laura about the support she needed, she expressed a desire to create a series of presentations aimed at alleviating people's fears about pursuing a healthier lifestyle. With that in mind, I commenced coaching her on how to channel her passion into various presentations.
A Moment of Vulnerability
However, during our coaching session, Laura suddenly appeared to retreat. Her expression turned distant, and I noticed she seemed disengaged. When I inquired about her thoughts, she quietly admitted, “I don’t have enough experience to discuss what I do. I just graduated, and others have been in this field for years. I’m just starting out.”
The room fell silent as she voiced her profound insecurity.
Challenging Misconceptions
I paused, holding her gaze and letting the moment linger, before stating, “You absolutely belong here.” I reassured her, saying, “While you might desire more experience in speaking or coaching clients, you have every right to be part of this conversation.”
As Laura absorbed this, I asked her a series of reflective questions about her healthcare background, the extensive hours invested in her training, and her life experiences as a mother. Together, we realized that her journey had equipped her with invaluable insights that could greatly benefit others. I then turned to the audience, asking if they believed Laura had something meaningful to offer potential clients, and they unanimously agreed.
By the end of our session, Laura’s demeanor had shifted significantly; she was smiling and radiated newfound confidence. Taking the time to reflect on her accomplishments helped her recognize her inherent value.
Embracing Your Right to Shine
I’ve shared that empowering message with many clients who aspire to write books, seek promotions, grow their businesses, or gain recognition in their current roles. Often, they struggle with feelings of inadequacy, convinced they lack the capability to take action despite their desires.
Frequently, these ambitions are hindered by negative beliefs about their worth and contributions. When they express these feelings, I never dismiss their anxieties, regardless of how unfounded they may seem.
Instead, I encourage them to examine what truly holds them back.
From my observations, individuals begin to transform when they pinpoint the root of their fears. This awareness allows them to question those beliefs and seek support in adopting a healthier mindset. Only after dissecting and addressing their outdated views do they catch up with their true selves.
When this realization occurs, the relief is tangible. They not only recognize their right to participate but also understand they can occupy as much space as they need.
Shifting Your Perspective
Here are some thought-provoking questions to consider when seeking a different viewpoint:
- What would you observe or feel if you knew you truly belonged?
- How would your posture change if you recognized your right to be here?
- What might others say to you if they acknowledged your presence?
- What small step could you take today if you fully embraced your right to be in the room?
- Who is one person who would uplift you if you allowed yourself to believe in your worth?
Final Reflections
Laura’s experience is far from isolated. Many individuals grapple with self-doubt regarding their value.
The encouraging news? They can reshape the narrative surrounding their negative thoughts. Confidence isn’t a fixed trait; with time and dedication, it can flourish.
When you appreciate your true worth, countless opportunities await you.
