Unlocking the Power of Position: How to Create Opportunities

Chapter 1: The Nature of Talent and Positioning

It’s not merely about talent; it's about how your circumstances shape perceptions.

A cozy gathering during the holiday season

Imagine it’s 11:35 PM on December 25th. It’s Christmas, and my old friends from school take a brief pause from their hectic lives to reconnect with family at their parents' homes. Although the holiday stress is palpable, it’s the enjoyable kind.

I find myself in an overpriced restaurant, where the ambiance and charming lighting justify the high prices — and it works. A friend has invited me to dinner with some acquaintances.

At the table, I recognize three people, while the earlier guests have already left. You can tell a group is comfortable when they start shifting seats and changing conversations, reminiscent of a game of musical chairs, which I find delightful.

Next to me sits a slender guy and his girlfriend. He claims to be 24 but appears to be much younger — maybe 20. Yet, I sense that he’s mentally planning his retirement, marriage, and a spacious estate suitable for several children. At 24, that seems plausible.

He projects a polished image, his sharp jawline complementing his business attire, complete with double-monk leather shoes. For half an hour, he enthusiastically shares about his business, and I struggle to disguise my fascination. We meander through various topics.

“You had Manuel Neuer at your party, and he actually showed up?”

I lean in, astonished, “The Bayern Munich player and 2010 World Cup champion?”

His confident grin says it all.

“Maybe it was just your girlfriend?” — I recall a catchy line from a 2014 ad. I hold back a chuckle, although it would have been amusing.

Now, I’m fully engaged. Even if I lost track of some details in his tale, the mention of Manuel Neuer has captured my attention completely.

“I’ll show you a photo!” He pulls out his phone, revealing a selfie with the famed goalkeeper in the background.

“How did that happen?” I inquire.

“You wouldn’t believe it; it wasn’t too complicated. To sum it up: my job connected me with his circle, and one thing led to another. While planning my party, I thought, why not? It seemed like a good idea. Honestly, I never expected it either. Sometimes, life is simpler than we assume.”

From this unexpected brush with fame, our conversation spirals into a fascinating discussion about creating seemingly unattainable realities.

There’s likely a hidden force in our environments that allows us to influence our circumstances more than we realize. Often, it’s the minor adjustments that simplify life, fostering situations where positivity can flourish.

When we engage in our “homework” — however that is defined (which we neglected to pin down) — we agree that life starts to feel more manageable. By preparing for future possibilities, we gradually enhance our chances of encountering beneficial opportunities.

This concept can be referred to as the “natural forcing” of opportunities.

I sensed we were onto something significant. I wanted to define what we had intuitively grasped.

Consequently, I jotted down some notes right after our conversation. After further research, it became evident that we were echoing sentiments already articulated by a brilliant thinker, Shane Parrish, author of ‘Clear Thinking: Turning Ordinary Moments into Extraordinary Results.’

He articulated what we struggled to express:

Achievements, be it mingling with celebrities or excelling in exams, are products of our positioning. The key to favorable outcomes lies in avoiding situations that corner us.

Positioning is about crafting advantageous circumstances.

To ensure a good position, one must systematically design an environment that aligns with their objectives. As Shane explains, this can be as straightforward as maintaining a healthy diet, ensuring sufficient sleep, exercising regularly, or networking. Our position is shaped by numerous small actions, which significantly influence the quality of our lives.

From a strong position, opportunities can trigger a cascade of positive outcomes.

If you’re well-positioned, perhaps Manuel Neuer is not just a renowned player, but simply someone who enjoys a good celebration?

“Out-positioning others is more crucial than being smarter than them. In a good position, anyone can seem brilliant, whereas even the brightest can falter in poor circumstances.” ~ Shane Parrish

Shane Parrish adeptly demystifies what it means to be exceptional. His work emphasizes how positioning plays a critical role in decision-making. A strong position is built on previous choices, no matter how trivial, which impact the decisions we face. The choices we make — be it nurturing relationships or managing debt — dictate whether we navigate life with ease or struggle.

The quality of our positioning influences our communication effectiveness and the peace of mind we experience at month-end, knowing we have financial reserves, rather than being overwhelmed by frugality (which, while valid, should be a conscious choice rather than a forced situation).

A favorable position reveals options and reduces risks, while poor positioning can blind us, compelling us into decisions driven by circumstances.

Good positioning alleviates the burden of decision-making. Instead of expending resources to make optimal choices, you can avoid landing in challenging situations altogether.

Positioning and Preparation

Preparing for an event and positioning ourselves effectively are distinct concepts.

Timberlands and Chelsea boots may both be classified as winter footwear, yet one cannot substitute for the other. As temperatures drop, both might prove essential; however, this isn't a fashion guide.

Preparation involves taking specific actions to enhance the likelihood of a particular event occurring; it’s about having a vision and a defined end goal. By making plans and outlining subsequent steps, we place ourselves in control, influencing outcomes to a degree.

Conversely, positioning isn’t about forecasting the future. Instead, it involves preparing for various potential scenarios.

Effective preparation lays the groundwork for strong positioning. Owning one pair of boots readies you for winter, while having another allows you to select outfits that are suitable for different occasions.

Feeling more at ease can lead to encounters with intriguing individuals — perhaps even Manuel Neuer — who knows?

How to Achieve a Favorable Position

Creating conducive circumstances and eliminating early obstacles necessitates foresight.

For instance, consider these strategies:

  • Manage your attention
  • Get the basics right
  • Elevate your standards through simple rules
  • Use attention to manage attention

Operating in “hard mode” resembles sprinting a marathon; it’s bound to lead to injury. The act of sprinting demands our full focus, diverting attention from considering alternatives, opportunities, and shortcuts.

Sprinters rarely discuss the scenery they encounter along the way.

Attention is life’s most valuable resource; how we allocate it shapes our worldview. When we’re in “hard mode,” we become susceptible to external forces that hijack our attention, resulting in lost opportunities.

By being attentive, we can identify happenings in our environment. This awareness allows us to create systems that minimize mistakes by default.

Getting the Basics Right

As Shane’s book title, “Turning Ordinary Moments into Extraordinary Results,” suggests, there’s often less magic in success than we might believe. Shane Parrish emphasizes a hard truth we often resist:

Success returns to mastering the fundamentals and scrutinizing our default behaviors.

While positioning doesn’t have a specific goal, the best way to prepare for various futures is to refine how we act and make decisions by default.

By mastering the basics, we mitigate issues, sidestep challenges, and place ourselves in optimal situations.

So, how do we excel at the basics?

It begins with the questions we pose to ourselves.

Questions steer our thoughts. Different inquiries yield varying cognitive patterns, emotional responses, and behaviors. Regardless of the question, we instinctively seek information to address them, impacting our thought processes.

For instance, altering “Will I work out today?” to “What will I train today?” or “How long will I exercise today?” can transform you from a sedentary individual to a fit person.

Changing questions leads to different outcomes.

An effective tactic for reframing questions is making them non-negotiable.

When something is deemed non-negotiable, it conserves energy and willpower by eliminating debates. This can streamline decision-making significantly.

Thus, the question shifts to: How can we establish non-negotiables and integrate them into our daily routines?

Raising Your Standards with Simple Rules

The human mind favors simplicity in decision-making. It tends to categorize, select perceptions, and utilize heuristics to navigate complex situations.

Rules provide clear, concise, and easily comprehensible guidelines that facilitate decision-making in intricate scenarios. They offer a framework that is both efficient and effective.

Rules simplify life by establishing boundaries. They clarify areas where choices seem limitless and temptations abound, enabling us to make confident decisions.

When something is categorized as a rule, it carries a different weight.

For example, you’re more likely to resist dessert if you establish a rule against it. Similarly, you’re more inclined to hit the gym if working out daily is your rule.

Rules are powerful instruments for enhancing decision-making by default, without relying solely on willpower. We typically follow established rules with less resistance. Small improvements in our default decisions can compound over time, creating better outcomes for us.

Simple and effective rules significantly influence our positioning.

Regardless of the brilliance of an idea, if you lack the financial means to act on it, the idea is effectively useless. ~ Shane Parrish

Our position acts as both a constraint and an enabler.

For me, enhancing my position involves small actions, like keeping a card handy to write a thoughtful note for my girlfriend on a hectic day, calling my parents weekly, or saving 25% of my paycheck each month.

In positioning, the little things matter immensely. Gradually, small changes can lead to significant transformations.

Our positions shape our outcomes, either working for or against us.

Ultimately, our positions determine whether we operate in “hard mode,” attempting a long-range shot against Manuel Neuer, or enjoy an easy penalty kick on an open net — and perhaps even celebrate the winning goal with him later.

The first video, "You're Not Talented - And That's A Good Thing," explores the notion that success isn't solely rooted in talent but rather in the choices we make and the environments we create.

The second video, "The Art of Getting a 'NO' In Your Next Negotiation | Chris Voss," discusses strategies for navigating negotiations and the power of rejection in achieving desired outcomes.
