Unlocking Language Learning: A Simple Yet Effective Strategy

Chapter 1: The Power of a Simple Trick
In a world dominated by apps like Duolingo, Pimsleur, and Babbel, you might think that a more traditional approach seems outdated. However, I discovered a technique that allowed me to learn vocabulary much more rapidly than before.
Towards the end of my college experience, I made the surprising choice to enroll in foreign language classes. You might wonder, “Why would anyone choose to do this at that stage in life?” Well, it’s the reality of navigating through educational paths without the wisdom of those who have gone before.
I found myself in Spanish 203, a beginner-level course, struggling to keep up. At 37, I was surrounded by younger students who had recently completed several years of Spanish. Their knowledge was fresh, while I grappled with a teacher who simply read from the textbook.
It was not until the following semester, when I joined Spanish 303, that I met John. He was older, sporting a beard reminiscent of Santa Claus in the off-season, and he brought a wealth of experience. One evening before class, he noticed me studying and decided to approach me.
The advice he offered felt like a game changer. Imagine trying to drive a nail with a rock, and then someone hands you a hammer. That’s how significant his input was.
Reflecting on my earlier college days, I realized I had spent most of my life searching for my own mentor, someone like Mr. Miyagi. In that Spanish 2 class, John temporarily filled that role.
He approached me without any pretense. With a genuine demeanor, he noticed my struggle and offered a solution. Out of nowhere, a stack of index cards landed on my desk.
“Here’s a trick my high school Spanish teacher taught me,” he said. We sat in a small two-seater in the lobby of Craig Hall at Missouri State University. John handed me the cards, and I noticed that each one had a list of words—two columns, one for English and one for Spanish.
“I cover one side and try to recall the other. I repeat this process until I’ve memorized them all,” he explained.
A Simple Yet Effective Technique
Although this method isn’t groundbreaking—flashcards have long been a staple in study habits—what mattered was that John shared it with me.
For more than 815 days, I’ve been using Duolingo for my Spanish studies, yet I hadn’t utilized index cards. My motivation to learn Spanish isn’t particularly strong, but I found that flashcards could significantly speed up the learning process.
If you’re new to language learning, using index cards can facilitate memorization at the outset. I truly wish I had discovered this sooner!

I haven’t engaged with many language learners recently, so I’m unsure how prevalent the use of index cards is today. If you’re familiar with this method already, I’d like to introduce you to another resource.
