Transformative Journey: How Living in Thailand Shaped My Life
Written on
Chapter 1: Arrival in Thailand
The journey commenced in early 2019. Picture a pale-skinned British man, arriving at Chiang Mai airport, utterly disoriented and without any knowledge of the Thai language. After an exhausting 37-hour journey, all he craved was rest. Reflecting on that moment, I hardly recognize that person; the growth I’ve undergone is remarkable.
Despite having researched extensively to prepare for potential feelings of isolation, the reality of living here was vastly different from my expectations. The first major difference I encountered was the food. Back home, I prided myself on being an adventurous cook, but the culinary options in Thailand were a delightful surprise, far from anything I had anticipated.
One significant revelation was the stark contrast in cooking habits. In the West, our full kitchens are essential due to the high cost of dining out, whereas in Thailand, eating at local eateries or purchasing street food is often just as economical as preparing meals at home. The difference lies in the time and effort required to cook, which is something many locals prefer to avoid.
Given this context, I found a room that suited this lifestyle, complete with a small balcony that had a sink for cooking and washing dishes, a luxury compared to the typical Thai setup.
Now, I reside in a spacious house within a small community. The changes I’ve undergone are significant. I’ve gradually improved my Thai language skills, allowing me to engage in basic conversations and share jokes. Driving here has also become second nature, navigating the chaotic traffic filled with cars and motorbikes.
As I adapted to the local culture, I unconsciously adopted various customs, such as receiving change with both hands or nodding while saying “krap” to express politeness. Even though I’ve blended in to some extent, at times I still feel like an outsider due to my appearance and the prevalent stereotypes about foreigners.
However, I wouldn’t trade my life in Thailand for my previous one in the UK. The advantages of living here far outweigh the drawbacks, and I am grateful to have made this vibrant country my home base for exploring Southeast Asia.
What changes have I experienced? For starters, my health has improved. Although Thai cuisine is renowned for its spiciness and sweetness, it also includes some of the healthiest options I’ve encountered. The weather is another plus, with abundant sunshine year-round, helping combat Seasonal Affective Disorder.
Living costs here are significantly lower; initially, I managed on around $300 a month, covering rent, utilities, and food. Now, in a larger space, my expenses have risen to about $500, which still feels manageable.
Mentally, I’ve found a calmness in the slower pace of life. While I might appear hurried to the locals, I’ve learned to appreciate the leisurely rhythm of daily activities.
For anyone contemplating a similar change, I recommend thorough research to determine your ideal destination and a clear plan for financial stability through online work or investments before making the leap. I was fortunate, but many others face difficulties without such preparation.
