Chapter 1: An Enchanting Display Over Mount Etna

Recently, Sicily has witnessed a captivating spectacle as circular clouds appeared above Mount Etna, Europe's largest active volcano. Although serious eruptions are rare in Sicily, the volcano continually reminds us of its presence. Recently, unusual cloud formations above Etna have caught significant media attention, intriguing many about their formation.

During the first weekend of April 2024, Mount Etna delighted both locals and tourists with an extraordinary show. Nearly perfect white rings ascended from the stratovolcano into the clear blue sky. In images and videos, these formations resemble smoke rings, prompting curiosity about their true nature and origin.

This video showcases Italy's Mount Etna releasing beautiful smoke circles, captivating viewers with this natural phenomenon.

How Do Vortex Rings Form?

Scientists have dubbed these formations "vortex rings." They occur when gases and vapors are rapidly expelled from a crater that developed on the volcano's surface earlier in April. Boris Behncke, a volcanologist from the Italian National Institute of Geophysics (INGV) and the Volcanology Observatory on Etna, explains, “Picture a narrow, cylindrical channel containing magma. Occasionally, a bubble on the magma's surface bursts, propelling a ‘gas projectile’ through the channel at high speeds.”

In this timelapse video, breathtaking lenticular clouds form over the summit of Etna, illustrating the beauty of nature's phenomena.

The Creation of Vortex Rings

The circular shape of the vent allows vapors to form into rings. These clouds, primarily composed of water vapor (approximately 80%), have a white appearance akin to smoke. The remaining components mainly include sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide. Remarkably, vortex rings are not uncommon, especially over Mount Etna. As Behncke notes, Etna is “the most fertile volcano on the planet for steam rings.”

Simona Scollo, another volcanologist from INGV, mentioned in a statement to “The New York Times” that the longevity of these rings varies based on weather conditions, lasting anywhere from one to ten minutes. The current activity from Etna does not indicate an imminent major eruption, providing peace of mind for both residents of Sicily and future visitors to this magnificent Italian island. However, it is essential to remain aware that Etna is an active volcano, with minor eruptions occurring several times a year.

Chapter 2: Fascinating Facts About Mount Etna

  • Mount Etna stands as the tallest active volcano in Europe, reaching an elevation of approximately 3357 meters.
  • It boasts one of the longest histories of documented volcanic activity, with the oldest eruptions traced back to around 1500 BC.
  • Today, it remains one of the most active volcanoes globally and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2007 due to its unique geological features, biodiversity, and cultural significance.
  • In Greek mythology, Etna was depicted as the forge of Hephaestus, the god of fire, metallurgy, and blacksmithing.
  • Locally, Sicilians often refer to the volcano as Mungibeddu.
