The Shift in Hollywood: Embracing Originality Over Superheroes

Written on

Chapter 1: The New Era of Cinema

Hollywood is undergoing a significant transformation, realizing that original ideas are drawing audiences back to theaters more effectively than superhero films.

As studios like Disney and Warner Brothers heavily invested in their superhero franchises, they believed the trend would last indefinitely. However, the reality hit hard when Warner Brothers faced financial challenges sooner than expected.

The DC Extended Universe (DCEU) films initially performed decently, but the releases of The Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman 1984 in 2021 marked a turning point. Both films struggled at the box office, leading to considerable losses for Warner Brothers.

In response to these setbacks, executives contemplated a complete reboot of their cinematic universe, bringing in James Gunn and Peter Safran to revitalize their superhero lineup. Similarly, Disney noticed a decline in the box office returns for their Marvel films, with Eternals receiving harsh criticism and audiences turning away from it. Despite some promising releases on the calendar, 2023 saw a consistent drop in revenue from superhero movies.

Disney's CEO Bob Iger pointed fingers at the previous strategy of prioritizing quantity over quality, despite having initially endorsed it before his retirement. While he raises a valid point, another significant takeaway emerged. The highest-grossing films of 2023—hailed for their originality and ambitious storytelling—collectively raked in about $4 billion at the box office.

Barbenheimer Phenomenon

The simultaneous release of Barbie and Oppenheimer on July 21, 2023, took the industry by surprise. While one film is a whimsical comedy and the other a serious biopic, a cultural meme—Barbenheimer—emerged, merging the contrasting tones of both films.

The stars of each movie embraced the meme, which was further supported by the studios, Warner Brothers and Universal, that produced them. Critical acclaim followed, with Barbie achieving an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and Oppenheimer an impressive 94%.

Despite their established backgrounds—Barbie being a renowned toy brand and Oppenheimer an iconic historical figure—both films provided fresh perspectives on familiar narratives. Their substantial box office success demonstrated the value of collaboration in the industry, delivering a vital lesson for future projects.

Musical Magic in Movies

The Super Mario Brothers Movie also capitalized on an existing franchise, emerging as one of the top-grossing films of 2023. Early acclaim suggested it could contend for an Oscar, particularly in the original song category—a realm where superhero films have often faltered.

Despite the potential for musical elements to enhance films, many studios remain hesitant, dismissing musicals as financial risks. However, recent musical releases, such as Wonka and The Color Purple, have proven otherwise, achieving strong box office performances over the Christmas 2023 holiday.

Wonka grossed $83 million shortly after its release, while The Color Purple garnered $25 million in just two days. This resurgence of musical storytelling highlights the power of music in film, reminding executives to consider this approach for future projects.

The Multiverse Reimagined

Sony's Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse showcased how to effectively utilize the multiverse concept, building on the foundation laid by its predecessor, Into The Spider-Verse. The sequel captivated audiences, earning a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and grossing over $690 million.

Additionally, Everything Everywhere All At Once, which also explored multiverse themes, garnered critical acclaim and numerous awards, amassing $141 million at the box office. The success of these films emphasizes the importance of allowing creative freedom for filmmakers.

The industry must recognize that genuine, innovative storytelling resonates with audiences, as demonstrated by the failures of projects like Disney's Wish. When studios prioritize originality and creativity, everyone stands to benefit.

Will Hollywood heed these lessons? Unlikely, as projections for 2024 box office revenues indicate a drop of 5% to 11%. While labor strikes have contributed to this decline, the overarching issue remains a lack of quality content.
