Chapter 1: The Challenge of Surrender
It's often said, "If you stop swimming, you drown." (Photo: Cdd20) The Weight of Surrender
There have been moments in my life where the thought of giving up felt overwhelming. At times, life appears to be an endless battle, and I find myself weary from the fight. The weight of it all sometimes feels unbearable, leading me to wish I could simply walk away. In these moments of fatigue and discouragement, the urge to give up creeps in.
“Keep going,” I hear echoed around me.
When discussing these feelings with others, their advice is typically to persevere. The phrase "Don't give up" has become so commonplace that it often feels devoid of impact. “Just keep swimming,” they urge, but what alternative do I have? Stopping means sinking!
I cannot afford to throw in the towel. The reality is that giving up is an expense I simply cannot bear. I’ve tested that option, and it yielded poor results.
The price of surrender is one I can't pay.
The True Expense of Giving Up
Choosing to give up isn't a luxury available to everyone, especially not to me. My life is filled with duties and commitments that I cannot abandon. Each day, I rise with the responsibility to write, maintain my home, and care for my child. Surrendering means neglecting all of these obligations.
A person who gives in remains confined to their bed, avoiding the day ahead. Given my responsibilities, how long could I allow myself that escape?
The life of a writer loses its essence if I abandon my passion. Writing is integral to my identity, a dream I must pursue. How could I forsake that?
When you relinquish your dreams, you essentially let go of your potential and the life you envisioned for yourself. You turn your back on your future.
I refuse to give up on myself.
Giving up translates to a day spent in bed, which means bills go unpaid. It would lead to homelessness, loss of transportation, and hunger. My child would suffer. That cost is far too steep for me.
I cannot afford to surrender.
To give up is to accept failure. It implies that I am willing to yield to my problems and accept a diminished reality. That option is simply unacceptable. I must explore alternatives that are within my reach.
When you give up on your dreams, you essentially abandon the person you could have been and the life you could have led. You forfeit your future.
Section 1.2: Finding Alternatives
I don’t want to mislead anyone; the journey is not simple. Life is fraught with challenges, and there are moments when it feels as if I’m losing ground. Yet, I hold on to the hope that better days are coming.
During these tough times, it can be hard to keep faith alive. The pain and struggle sometimes seem insurmountable.
When grappling with adversity, I remind myself of my purpose. My experiences may help others navigate their own hardships, so they don’t have to face the same battles.
Whenever I feel isolated in my challenges, I recall that I am not alone. I am valuable to myself and to those who care about me. My daughter relies on me, which fuels my determination to keep going.
In times of overwhelming pressure, I reach out to mentors for support and direction. I trust that guidance will come, even in the darkest moments.
Self-care takes precedence in my life. I must prioritize my own well-being if I am to care for my child effectively. This means nurturing both my physical and emotional health. I carve out time for prayer, meditation, exercise, and activities that rejuvenate my spirit.
Spending quality time with my daughter helps me reconnect with my inner child and rediscover joy.
Above all, I grant myself grace during times of struggle. If I find it hard to rise each morning, I remind myself that it’s okay to rest and recharge. I might take a few extra minutes to sleep and then pray for strength to carry on.
I ask for the fortitude to keep swimming because stopping means I begin to drown. I move forward, step by step, hoping for brighter days ahead.
In those moments of doubt, I remember the purpose behind my journey. By enduring, I can inspire others who may face similar trials. My narrative can serve as a beacon of hope.

Chapter 2: The Light of Hope
In moments when hope feels elusive, I remind myself of the purpose behind my struggles. My journey can provide solace to others.
When I feel overwhelmed, I remember that I am not alone. I prioritize self-care and maintain connections with those who uplift me. I am everything to my daughter, which serves as a powerful motivator.
When the burden becomes too much, I reach out to trusted individuals for support. I believe that guidance will come, even in the darkest hours.
Self-care is essential. I cannot care for my child if I neglect myself. This includes nurturing my physical and emotional well-being. I make time for activities that bring me joy, such as prayer, meditation, and exercise.
I learn from my daughter about how to rediscover my own joy by spending time with her.
And most importantly, I give myself grace when I face challenges. If I’m too exhausted to continue, I allow myself to rest. If getting out of bed feels daunting, I remind myself that it’s part of being human. I may allow myself a bit more rest and then pray for renewed strength.
I ask for the strength to keep swimming because stopping means I start to sink. I continue to move forward, one step at a time, hoping that circumstances will improve.
In those moments of struggle, I remind myself that my experiences hold purpose. My journey can inspire others to find hope in their own lives.
Just Keep Swimming
You’ve heard it countless times, but it's worth repeating: don’t give up. Just keep swimming.
If you find yourself feeling like a failure, remember that you’re not alone. I share in that feeling. It’s okay to acknowledge it, but giving up isn’t the only path. Though it may seem like the easiest escape, there are always alternatives.
Hope is a far more accessible option, even if it requires swimming long distances to uncover it.
In hope, I find my salvation.
When you tire of swimming, don’t surrender. Instead, find a stable place to rest. For me, my faith serves as that anchor. When I hold on, I can find rest amid the storm.
You too can find your steadfast rock. Submit to a higher power and seek assistance. Reach out to someone you trust and prioritize self-care. You possess more strength than you realize, and you can persevere even in the most challenging times.
As you continue to swim and eventually reach solid ground, you will be inspired to share your story, which can uplift countless others.
That will be your purpose.
So, keep fighting, and never relinquish your belief in yourself. Just keep swimming, and you will not drown. Hope awaits you, and you will find your way to safety.
