# The Power of Silence: Why I Keep My iPhone on Do Not Disturb Mode
Written on
Chapter 1: Embracing Silence
My phone is muted 99% of the time. Years ago, I opted out of receiving alerts and notifications for calls and messages. No banners, no alerts—everything is checked manually, and I plan to maintain this lifestyle indefinitely. Notifications can be a trap and a significant drain on productivity.
When I observe others who openly display their “Do Not Disturb” status, I can't help but wonder. Several questions arise:
- Are they unaware that they can conceal this feature?
- Do they realize they can simply turn off their devices?
- Are they informed about how to silence their notifications?
- Are they genuinely busy, or are they still responding to messages?
- Why do they feel the need to publicly indicate that they are unavailable?
- Why activate Do Not Disturb after reaching out for emotional support?
If solitude is what you seek, embrace it fully.
If you wish to avoid disturbances, consider putting your phone away.
For a peaceful sleep, switch your phone off or silence it.
If you want to avoid someone’s messages, either block them or directly communicate your wishes.
My schedule is often packed. There are times when it takes me weeks to respond to messages, but I always make it a point to reply eventually.
Stay Available
I admire a statement from an executive: “I’m a busy woman, but I don’t have a ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign on my office door.” While she may not assist everyone, she remains approachable.
Not disclosing your Do Not Disturb status keeps you reachable, as it allows you to respond to messages at your convenience. You can lead your life on your terms, replying when it suits you best.
Successful Individuals Stay Reachable
The most accomplished people prioritize accessibility, aiming to uplift, support, and assist others. They may not respond instantly, but they do get back to you without making you feel like a burden.
I’m learning that, despite my busy lifestyle, I can choose where to invest my time wisely. This might upset some, but aligning my priorities with my objectives is essential for my progress.
If You Want to Boost Productivity, Consider These Four Tips
- Turn off the TV.
- Reduce your time on social media.
- Set your phone aside, switch it off, or silence notifications.
- Avoid aimlessly browsing the internet or researching topics that don’t contribute to your goals.
Final Thoughts
While there are moments when alerts are necessary, in most situations, they are not required unless your job demands it. Even then, I prefer to check notifications manually, as my work is rarely a matter of life and death.
People do not need an immediate response, no matter how significant they claim to be.
It’s Acceptable to Be Unreachable!
Resist the urge to check every notification immediately.
