# The Overload of Misinformation: Can Our Brains Cope?

Written on

Chapter 1: The Challenge of Modern Information

The internet today is putting a strain on our cognitive capacities.

Recently, Google introduced a new AI feature promising to streamline our search experience. The tagline, "Let Google handle the searching for you," suggests that users can get quick answers without having to sift through data. However, this innovation has led to some alarming outputs—most notoriously, the suggestion that one should consume a rock daily or slather glue on pizza.

While these examples seem absurd, they underscore a significant risk associated with AI-driven search engines. The current AI models are widely acknowledged as unreliable—they often "hallucinate" and rely heavily on the quality of their source material (the misguided advice about rock consumption originated from a satirical piece).

Despite these missteps, Google has shown its commitment to keeping pace in the competitive AI landscape, even if that means compromising on the accuracy of search results. Although the company is now scrambling to amend the fallout from its AI search features, the momentum to integrate AI into various platforms remains unabated. For instance, my tax software recently encouraged me to consult a chatbot for critical financial advice, all while including a cautionary note: "AI Tax Assist is still learning, so please verify all responses."

Most AI systems come with similar, often darkly humorous disclaimers, leaving users with a confusing message: "We want you to use this technology, but we must remind you it could be unreliable or unhelpful."

Navigating the current online landscape feels like maneuvering through an endless maze. Beyond the unreliable AI outputs, we contend with:

  1. Misinformation: Some of which is deliberately spread for political or economic gain, while other instances stem from the careless actions of trolls.
  2. Advertising: It is increasingly difficult to differentiate between genuine information and promotional content, as search results are often cluttered with "sponsored" listings.
  3. Clickbait: Headlines designed to provoke curiosity often lead to disappointing or worthless content.
  4. Fake Reviews: Once deemed reliable, rating systems have been manipulated, making it hard to trust collective opinions.
  5. Deceptive Media: With advancements in AI, fake images, videos, and audio are becoming more realistic.
  6. Algorithmic Manipulation: Techniques designed to capture our attention often lead us to unwanted or harmful content.

In summary, the internet has devolved into a chaotic space. Once a realm of optimism and community, it now feels unsafe and overwhelming. It's crucial to scrutinize everything we encounter; the stakes have never been higher.

Have we ever faced such a barrage of misleading information? Have we been this inundated with attempts to distort our understanding of reality? This is particularly disheartening given that we have access to more accurate information than ever before. With the right skills, resources, and determination, anyone can become better informed than ever before in human history. Yet, achieving this has become increasingly difficult.

Historically, people held misconceptions about the world due to a lack of knowledge. They believed in geocentric models or superstitions about illness. Their misunderstandings arose from ignorance rather than manipulation.

Today, we have the means to uncover the truth about critical issues such as vaccines, climate change, and economic conditions. Despite this, the challenge lies in our ability to perceive the world accurately.

Perhaps our brains are simply not equipped to handle the overwhelming flood of misinformation. Our cognitive evolution occurred in an era of limited information, yet we now face an avalanche of data, much of which is misleading or intentionally harmful.

Individuals and organizations are working tirelessly to manipulate us into making detrimental choices, from unnecessary purchases to self-destructive behaviors. They gamble that our cognitive faculties will falter amidst the overwhelming noise of misinformation.

It's as though we are using an outdated radar system, originally designed to detect a few planes, now bombarded with hundreds of signals along with distractions that obscure our judgment. It's no wonder many people's ability to discern is faltering.

When discussing these issues, experts often advocate for enhancing "media literacy" and "critical thinking." While such skills are valuable, I believe it's misguided to place the full burden of this problem on individuals.

The concept of "media literacy" is reminiscent of the carbon footprint narrative, created by corporations to divert attention from their own responsibilities. While changing personal behaviors, such as energy consumption, is important, focusing solely on individual actions allows larger systemic issues to persist unchallenged.

The same applies to combating misinformation. While it's beneficial to learn how to identify deepfakes or political propaganda, we must also work to mitigate the sources of this misinformation.

This involves two key actions. First, individuals should reconsider their engagement with harmful information environments. Evaluate whether the social media you consume:

  • Enhances your well-being
  • Provides an accurate worldview
  • Operates transparently without constant manipulation

If it doesn't meet these criteria, consider walking away. Companies will only change their practices when users choose to disengage.

Second, regulations must adapt to current realities. Internet companies have long used protections like Section 230 to evade accountability for the content they host. Although there's bipartisan recognition of the need for reform, meaningful changes remain lacking. One potential solution could involve holding platforms accountable for the content they amplify through algorithms, rather than merely what they host. Another option would be to mandate a chronological feed that presents posts from followed users in the order they are published. Imagine the clarity that could bring!

I’m sure there are other ideas worth exploring; feel free to share your thoughts in the comments. What I do know is that the human brain struggles to cope with the overwhelming influx of misinformation, and it appears we are only at the beginning of this tidal wave.
