Chapter 1: The Allure of Leaving the 9–5 Grind
In today's digital landscape, social media has birthed a new wave of influencers who seem to live lives brimming with freedom, wealth, and creativity. Platforms like TikTok and YouTube showcase individuals who appear to have abandoned the typical 9–5 routine in favor of exciting, fulfilling careers. This phenomenon prompts many to reevaluate their own conventional jobs, often filled with monotony and predictability.
However, before we hastily embrace the notion of leaving our steady employment, it is essential to consider insights from Stoic philosophy and empirical research. Are we sure that forsaking our 9–5 jobs will truly lead to greater fulfillment and success?
Addressing the Problem
Post-pandemic, we've witnessed a surge of content creators gaining notoriety through various means, including ASMR TikToks and quirky social media challenges. Even young teens are now sharing stock market advice and political commentary. The narrative that quitting a 9–5 job leads to liberation is prevalent in the blogging community, where many share their journeys of leaving traditional employment behind.
It's important to note that the concept of a 9–5 job is far from new; countless individuals engage in this structure across various industries. Some do it out of necessity for family, others for personal ambition, and many find satisfaction in their roles. Personally, I have enjoyed my own 9–5 job for three years, and I see no reason to despise it.
So, why do some creators promote a negative view of 9–5 employment? The answer likely lies in the fact that a significant portion of the population—around 80%—is employed in traditional roles. Many seek an escape from their routine through online content that promises a more glamorous life. This trend easily goes viral, encouraging others to join in with similar messages.
The Stoic Perspective: Building Inner Strength

Rooted in ancient Greece, Stoicism teaches us to cultivate inner strength and detach from external influences. While influencers may promote the idea of quitting a 9–5 job to escape traditional limitations, Stoic philosophy reminds us that genuine freedom comes from mastering our thoughts and reactions.
As Epictetus wisely noted, “People are disturbed not by the events that occur, but by their perceptions of those events.” This serves as a reminder that even if we escape the confines of a 9–5 job, our inner dialogue remains. Therefore, instead of chasing external validation, we should focus on nurturing our inner peace, which can be achieved regardless of our employment status.
Stoicism encourages us to appreciate our current situations and recognize that happiness is not solely derived from our job titles, but rather from our responses to daily challenges. Embracing the present moment is crucial.
The Science of Job Satisfaction
Scientific research also sheds light on the factors influencing job satisfaction and overall happiness. While salary is undoubtedly a component of job contentment, it is not the only factor. Psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s concept of “flow” emphasizes the importance of being fully engaged and fulfilled in our activities.
Achieving a state of flow is possible in any job, provided that it aligns with our interests and abilities. Additionally, psychologists Edward L. Deci and Richard M. Ryan's Self-Determination Theory identifies autonomy, competence, and relatedness as essential components for intrinsic motivation and overall well-being.
Surprisingly, many 9–5 jobs can offer these elements, providing a sense of purpose, opportunities for skill development, and camaraderie with coworkers. Contrary to the narrative pushed by influencers, research indicates that happiness and job satisfaction can be found within traditional employment. It's not necessarily the job that dictates our contentment; rather, it's our perspective and approach.
A Balanced Approach: Finding Middle Ground
Instead of viewing employment as an all-or-nothing choice, consider integrating elements of creativity and self-expression into your life while maintaining stable employment. Social media can serve as a platform to share your passions, connect with like-minded individuals, and foster community.
Before succumbing to the enticing notion of leaving your 9–5 job, it's wise to reflect on the deeper implications and practical aspects. Pursuing passions and creativity does not have to come at the expense of stability and security.
Ultimately, by merging both worlds and adopting a Stoic mindset, we can develop a sense of inner resilience and balance that contributes to a more satisfying and purposeful life.
