The Incredible True Story of a Man Mistaken for Dead

Chapter 1: A Chilling Encounter
The extraordinary case of Albert Corbett stands out as one of history's more unusual events. Throughout time, many have harbored the irrational fear of being mistakenly declared deceased before their vitality is discovered. While such incidents are rare, they do occur. Consider the account of a man from Chicago over a century ago who narrowly escaped the morgue after awakening just in time to ask a startled nurse for his pants to ward off the cold.
An article in the November 1, 1911 issue of the Muncie Evening Press recounted the shocking yet oddly humorous tale of Albert Corbett, a 39-year-old mechanic. After suffering a fractured skull, he was rushed to the hospital for surgery. The situation was precarious, and while the doctors believed he had succumbed, he was very much alive.
Following his erroneous declaration of death, Corbett was placed in the morgue. Approximately 30 minutes later, he regained consciousness on the cold slab, likely driven by the frigid temperatures. Upon spotting a young nurse, he confusedly mumbled, "Gimme my pants. I’m chilled and want to go home to my wife; she can take care of me better than anybody."
Naturally, the nurse, thinking she was alone in the morgue, fled in terror. Colleagues quickly rushed in to investigate and discovered Corbett was indeed alive.
Despite his unexpected revival, Corbett was still in a precarious condition due to his head injury. He was transferred back to a proper hospital room under the care of Dr. Daniel Teter, the facility's assistant warden.
Section 1.1: The Struggles of Medicine
The circumstances surrounding Corbett's situation may have stemmed from a struggling intern. Reports indicated that Dr. Talbot, who performed the surgery, was feeling particularly despondent after believing that Corbett had died—this being the third consecutive patient he had lost. He expressed concern that he was cursed, a notion that was somewhat alleviated by Corbett's unexpected recovery.

Section 1.2: A Second Chance
When Corbett later reflected on the incident, he couldn't recall how he had sustained his injury. He remembered being at a bar and getting into a fight, and then waking up in the morgue.
Corbett had unwittingly been mistaken for dead because it was assumed he had stopped breathing. Under the influence of ether anesthesia, his breathing had become so shallow and infrequent that it went unnoticed. Given the severity of his injury, the presumption of his death became all the more credible.
Once it became evident that he would survive, the doctor conveyed to Corbett just how fortunate he truly was. With a hint of bravado, Corbett responded, "Thank you, doc. I never did think of dying; too much to live for."
