Exploring the Doubts of Thomas: Faith and Reason Combined

Written on

Chapter 1: The Doubts of Thomas

The term "Doubting Thomas" is derived from the events recorded in John 20.

"After eight days had passed, the disciples were gathered once more, and Thomas was present among them. Jesus appeared, despite the doors being locked, and proclaimed, 'Peace be with you.' He then addressed Thomas directly, saying, 'Put your finger here and observe My hands; reach out your hand and place it into My side. Stop doubting and believe.' Thomas responded, 'My Lord and my God!' Jesus replied, 'You believe because you have seen Me. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed' (John 20:26–29 NASB)."

Thomas's skepticism led him to demand tangible proof before accepting the resurrection of Jesus. Despite having witnessed numerous miracles and teachings from Christ, he prioritized rational thought over divine power.

Apologetics, which involve reasoned arguments supporting a belief, particularly regarding the divinity of Christ, are prevalent today. Many scholars can spend extensive time demonstrating the authenticity of the Bible. Yet, mere evidence is insufficient. Our hearts often resist the truth, misleading us in pursuit of our desires (Jeremiah 17:9). Our own hearts can be deceptive.

For Thomas to truly encounter Christ in faith, his heart had to be redirected. He called Jesus "My Lord" because he recognized the authority of the risen Christ and "My God" as an acknowledgment of His divinity. His unwavering belief stemmed not from the physical evidence he sought but from experiencing Christ's presence and His words. Do you choose to obey, trust, and worship a Christ who speaks to you today?
