The Essential Lesson I Gained from Two Years of Self-Improvement

Written on

Chapter 1: The Quest for Personal Growth

Most individuals aspire to enhance their lives, whether through fitness, increasing their earnings, or developing healthier habits. With a wealth of resources available—from writing guides to productivity audiobooks and health documentaries—self-improvement seems more accessible than ever. I've immersed myself in the works of various influential figures such as Shaunta Grimes, Tim Ferriss, James Clear, Jeff Goins, and Ayodeji Awosika, all of whom have inspired my journey (links included for your reference; I do not have personal connections with them). Additionally, I found valuable insights from sources like MissFitAndNerdy and the MindPump Podcast for health and fitness advice.

However, the journey of self-improvement is rarely straightforward. Like many during the pandemic, I experienced a period of depression and lost motivation. I neglected my workouts, became less spontaneous in my marriage, and put aside reading for over a year. Throughout this time, I often resolved to return to the gym or dedicate time to writing, only to find myself lounging on the couch or aimlessly browsing the internet instead.

It's amusing how, after completing an article for the first time in months, I would declare, “Today marks the beginning of my renewed commitment to daily writing,” yet fail to produce anything the following day—or even the next. Similarly, I could enjoy a workout with my husband and vow, “This was fantastic! I’ll do this three times a week,” yet go months without touching a dumbbell.

The crux of the matter is this: the decision to act and the act of doing are distinct events.

When I used to listen to TED talks, one speaker posed a thought-provoking question:

There are three frogs sitting by a pond. Two decide to jump in. How many frogs remain by the pond?

The intuitive answer might be one, but that's incorrect. Although two frogs decided to leap, they never took the action to jump into the water.

This insight resonated with me deeply. I cannot recall how many mornings I resolved to work out before the day ended, only to find myself crawling into bed without having performed a single squat.

Frederick Douglass, the renowned abolitionist, author, and former slave, once said, “I prayed for twenty years but received no answer until I prayed with my legs.”

We can make decisions throughout the day, many of which occur unconsciously—like getting dressed or taking the usual route to work. However, if we fail to hold ourselves accountable and actually engage in actions that support our decisions, those choices lose their value. As the saying goes, “The road to Hell is paved with good intentions.”

Our choices remain mere good intentions until we act. Every day, we must consciously choose to take steps toward our goals to achieve meaningful progress.
