The Enriching Journey of Travel: A Personal Reflection

Written on

Chapter 1: The Early Days of Travel

My journey into the world of travel began at the tender age of twelve when my parents took me to Chicago. We explored the city, visited what was then known as the Sears Tower, and enjoyed the parks together. This trip marked the beginning of my adventures across various states, thanks to my parents' belief in the importance of travel for children. They understood that these experiences would not only bring us closer as a family but also teach us invaluable lessons. My father particularly wanted to instill in us a sense of curiosity and a spirit of adventure, and I believe he succeeded.

Despite limited financial resources, my parents saved diligently to provide my siblings and me with enriching experiences. Since 2010, I have traveled to 34 states. Although I have yet to venture beyond the borders of my home country, I aspire to do so in the coming years.

Chapter 2: Dreaming Big

Like many young girls, I harbored grand and somewhat unrealistic dreams. The desire to travel consumed my thoughts, and I even entertained the idea of becoming a travel influencer, sharing glamorous snapshots of my adventures on social media. I envisioned myself in stunning hotels and exotic locales. However, after learning about influencers who accrued debt to maintain their lifestyles, I quickly reconsidered my plans.

Instead, I thought about embracing the "van life" trend sweeping the nation. However, I soon discovered that the initial costs of purchasing and renovating a van were astronomical, rivaling or exceeding the monthly expenses of renting an apartment. I realized I needed to think creatively about my travel aspirations.

Perhaps I could join the Peace Corps or volunteer with WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) during the summers. Alternatively, I could pursue a career that involves travel, such as becoming a flight attendant or a travel agent.

Chapter 3: The Practical Path

Ultimately, I chose a more conventional route. I enrolled in college and embarked on a four-year journey to obtain my bachelor’s degree. Ironically, the expenses associated with my education ended up being higher than what I would have spent pursuing a travel-centric lifestyle. The demands of academia left little room for travel, as I opted to work to pay for my schooling rather than incur additional debt.

Chapter 4: The First Post-Graduation Adventure

Upon graduating, I was eager to return to traveling. That summer, I managed to save enough to take a celebratory trip in the fall for my birthday, which coincided with my 23rd year. I planned a week-long getaway to Tennessee, with a brief stop in St. Louis.

This journey opened my eyes to the complexities of travel. As I navigated unexpected challenges, I felt a renewed sense of purpose and joy that had been missing from my life. Unfortunately, I went nearly $1,000 over budget. My plan included spending one night in St. Louis and another in Nashville before dedicating two nights to Dollywood and two nights camping in the Smokey Mountains.

Upon budgeting, I initially estimated the trip would cost around $1,000. However, I underestimated the costs of camping equipment and food. My expenses quickly added up, but the investment was worthwhile, as I could now enjoy camping adventures on a budget in the future. I also learned the importance of planning meals and utilizing grocery stores to save on food costs.

Chapter 5: Lessons Learned on the Road

During my time in the Smokey Mountains, I encountered a hiccup when my car got stuck while trying to navigate a wide turn. The narrow, rugged roads made it challenging to regain traction. While the situation was stressful, it turned out to be one of the most memorable moments of my trip. I had the chance to meet some of the kindest locals, one of whom shared stories about his family and the town's history while checking my car for damage.

While it’s vital to prioritize safety while traveling, I highly recommend engaging with locals whenever possible.

Chapter 6: Traveling with Pets

Many people express disbelief when I mention traveling with my cats. Since they weren’t accustomed to it as kittens, the experience proved challenging. They were anxious throughout the trip, making it difficult for everyone involved. I had to make extra arrangements, including booking an additional night at a hotel to ensure we could arrive at Dollywood right at opening time. Unfortunately, I missed out on several hiking opportunities and had to cut the trip short because my cats were so distressed.

While I hate leaving them behind, I’ve decided their happiness—and mine—comes first for future trips.

Chapter 7: The Exhaustion of Travel

I was surprised by how draining travel can be. Long days on the road left me feeling exhausted and ready for a break by the end of my trip. I often wonder how travel influencers manage to transition from one trip to another without burning out. My desire to see many places led to a packed itinerary that left little time to savor each destination. For instance, during my time in Nashville, I mostly drank water while barhopping to stay hydrated for a schedule that had me awake from dawn until long after dusk.

I continue to refine my travel planning skills, as I haven't fared much better with subsequent trips. Nevertheless, I am grateful for the remarkable places I've visited, regardless of the fatigue that follows.

Chapter 8: Embracing the Journey

Through my experiences, I’ve come to realize that traveling involves much more than I initially understood. However, one thing remains true: traveling is an incredibly rewarding endeavor. While unexpected challenges may arise, the insights and memories gained typically outweigh any inconveniences faced.

I firmly believe that travel has made me a more responsible, grounded, and insightful person. Despite the potential costs, I view travel as a valuable investment and intend to continue exploring the world for years to come.
