A decade ago, a star seemingly vanished from the night sky, leaving astronomers puzzled about the reason behind its disappearance.

Although this star initially appears to be an ordinary red dot among countless others, a closer look reveals something peculiar. It moves at such a rapid pace that it seems destined to escape our galaxy, drifting into the emptiness of intergalactic space. Yet, defying Newton's laws, it remains within our reach.

Half a year prior to its disappearance, something astonishing occurred: the star vanished abruptly, without leaving any trace behind—no supernova explosion, no debris field, and no black hole forming. The only remnant was a faint blue glow.

Six months later, the star re-emerged as mysteriously as it had disappeared, showing no signs of the event. Since then, it has quietly illuminated the night sky, while astronomers have found no evidence of a recurrence in nearly two decades of observations.

This enigmatic star has been designated VVV-WIT-08, named after the VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea survey, which first documented its unusual behavior. The "WIT" stands for "What Is It?" reflecting the star's bizarre characteristics, with "08" serving as a numerical identifier among other peculiar findings.

Curious about the star's odd behavior and its sudden vanishing act, astronomers have conducted in-depth studies, culminating in a research paper published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Potential Explanations for the Disappearance

Several theories exist regarding how a star might disappear. It could have been obliterated—possibly collapsing into a black hole—or it may have dimmed significantly for unknown reasons. Another possibility is that an object obstructed our view of the star.

The research team evaluated these hypotheses. The destruction theory can be quickly dismissed, as the star returned after approximately 200 days, behaving as it did before. While dimming could be a possibility, it would be highly unusual for a star of its type.

The most plausible explanation is that something obscured the star from our view for several months before moving away, allowing the light to reach us once more.

However, identifying what that "something" is has proven challenging. First, is it a small object near Earth, or a larger one orbiting the star? Or is it something of intermediate size?

Consider the first scenario: a small object near Earth. While it seems reasonable that an asteroid could pass in front of the star, the constant movement of celestial bodies means such an obstruction would only be temporary.

What about the second scenario, involving a massive object close to the star? A colossal entity—a giant planet, for example—could have blocked the star's light for an extended period, similar to a prolonged eclipse. However, this object would need to be extraordinarily large, which raises questions about natural occurrences of such a size.

If that concept is difficult to visualize, then consider the third scenario: a significant object located in between. This theory, however, presents its own complications. Notably, no other nearby stars exhibited similar phenomena, suggesting that the event was unique to VVV-WIT-08.

Additionally, the absence of other stars displaying comparable light patterns indicates that if there were massive dark objects floating in interstellar space, we should observe multiple instances, not just this solitary event. Thus, astronomers conclude that something exceptional about this particular star likely caused the incident.

After deliberation, the researchers are inclined to believe that a distinctive factor related to this star was responsible—potentially a large object that was either in orbit around it or passed close by. They then speculated on what that object might be.

The characteristics they hypothesized are remarkable. For it to block out a star much larger than our Sun, the object must be enormous—estimated to span at least fifty million miles, or half the distance between the Earth and the Sun. It must also be dim, or we would have observed its light, and sufficiently dense to entirely obscure the star's brightness.

Very few entities match this description. Nevertheless, the astronomers proposed various candidates, including large planets, failed stars, and disrupted solar systems, but none satisfactorily accounted for all observed features of this mysterious event.

One intriguing possibility involves a second star orbiting VVV-WIT-08, potentially stripping gas and dust as it passes, forming a cloud of debris that rendered it nearly invisible. If this cloud were to align with our view of VVV-WIT-08, it could produce a temporary eclipse, hiding the star from sight.

Another option is a black hole or neutron star revolving around the star. Such a dense object might theoretically block its light temporarily. However, black holes typically emit intense bursts of radiation, which have not yet been detected in this case.

Nonetheless, the absence of radiation does not completely dismiss the black hole hypothesis. These objects can experience quiet periods, and the limited detail in our observations might mean we missed any radiation emitted.

Ultimately, the researchers found complications with every explanation they considered. This has led some to entertain the old notion of alien megastructures orbiting the star. However, the evidence supporting this theory remains as tenuous as for any other hypothesis.
