Engagement: The Key to Sustained Action in Self-Improvement

Chapter 1: The Challenge of Engagement
Taking the first step can be daunting, but maintaining that engagement poses an even greater challenge. Many of us have faced that moment when we finally decide to break free from our comfort zones, leaving behind overthinking and procrastination. We make a commitment, fueled by positive emotions, to work towards our "ideal body," "dream job," or other aspirations.
Yet, weeks or months down the line, we often find ourselves giving up. What went wrong? Typically, it’s a lack of groundwork that leads to this setback.
In November 2023, I resolved to start going to the gym. I found an inspiring workout routine demonstrated by an enthusiastic individual and committed to following it. However, my excitement fizzled out, and just three weeks later, I quit. I felt like a failure, which was disheartening.
In January 2024, I decided to give it another shot, this time with a completely different mindset. I aimed to simplify the process and minimize any barriers to my commitment. Initially, I struggled to wake up early for a 7 AM gym session, so I adjusted my goal to 9 AM instead.
Previously, complex workouts and lengthy routines had discouraged me, so I shifted to a straightforward regimen of push-ups and a 15-minute run, totaling just 30 minutes of activity. As I built momentum, I gradually made adjustments; the following month, I woke up at 8 AM and incorporated new exercises to extend my gym time.
After three and a half months, I now exercise for two hours each day. I even achieved my first muscle-up recently!
I encourage you to adopt this principle in your own pursuits: Make things simple. As you progress, continue to adapt your approach until you reach your desired goals.
Let me know your thoughts—remember, all change requires a process to become ingrained in our lives. Starting with simplicity is an effective way to maintain engagement with that change.
