Embracing Cloudy Days: The Hidden Benefits of Gloomy Weather

Chapter 1: The Value of Gloomy Days
It's somewhat unconventional to suggest that we need cloudy days. While this holds true literally, it also applies on a metaphorical level. A gloomy day brings with it a unique atmosphere—calm, soothing, and tranquil. However, I often find myself feeling a bit out of sorts on such days, grappling with a sense of melancholy.
Every morning, I dedicate time to journaling, aiming for three pages of personal reflections. Lately, though, it’s been a challenge just to fill one page. But today was different; the words flowed freely. I managed to express a lot of pent-up thoughts, and that was incredibly liberating. It wasn't any single event that triggered my mood; it was just one of those things that happens, as if the universe was aligning itself yet again.
I'm a strong advocate for the idea that the universe—whether you call it a higher power, God, or something else—has a way of guiding us. After journaling, I sifted through my emails from the past few days and stumbled upon James Clear’s 3-2-1 weekly newsletter from Thursday. As a side note, if you're not subscribed to his insights, you should definitely consider it.
I found it curious that I hadn’t read this email sooner, but it became clear that it was meant for today. One quote from the newsletter struck me deeply; it was an excerpt from actor Stephen Fry discussing how to navigate through challenging days. You can read the full piece here.
Fry likened experiencing a bad day to the unpredictability of weather. Just as we can’t wish away unfavorable weather, we must also accept our feelings about life as they come. He stated, “Today’s a crap day” is a completely valid perspective.
Fry reassures us that the sun will eventually shine again, and he’s absolutely right.
Call to Action
If today happens to be one of those gloomy days for you, that’s entirely acceptable. Often, we deny ourselves the right to feel down; we try to wear a mask of strength for others while feeling different inside. Instead, grant yourself permission to experience a low day. Here are some suggestions to help you cope:
- Acknowledge Your Feelings: Even if it’s challenging, allow yourself to feel what you're feeling. This release can be incredibly beneficial.
- Journaling: Writing down your thoughts can be therapeutic. If you're concerned about privacy, jot them down, tear the paper, and dispose of it. Some even find it helpful to burn their writings, turning those thoughts to ashes.
- Go for a Nature Walk: Step outside and breathe deeply. Connecting with nature can uplift your spirit.
- Stretch or Practice Yoga: Engaging in physical activity can refocus your energy.
- Talk it Out: Share your feelings with someone close to you. Let them know you don’t need advice; you just want to express yourself.
- Take a Nap: Sometimes, simply allowing yourself extra rest is the best remedy.
Always remember that we all experience cloudy and stormy days—days that seem overwhelmingly negative. The sun will always reemerge.
Be well, friends.
