Embrace Flexibility: The Importance of Straying from Routine

Written on

Chapter 1: The Value of Routine

Routines play a significant role in our lives. If they weren’t beneficial, why would we adhere to them? While routines can structure our days and weeks, they shouldn't dominate them.

For instance, I diligently follow a weekly meal-planning regimen. I’m aware of which evenings require quick meals and which ones offer more time for cooking. Here’s how I manage this:

  1. Create a weekly menu.
  2. Compile a grocery list that reflects both available and necessary pantry items.
  3. Shop just once a week. Yes, you read that correctly!

Despite juggling a full-time job and a 30-minute commute, this meal-planning system allows me to cook at home six days a week, which is a priority for my family. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

However, I do break away from my routines occasionally.

For example, when the craving for a hearty pot of red beans and rice strikes on a chilly winter day, I may throw my weekly schedule aside. The soaking process takes a day, and the cooking requires hours, but with a weekend or holiday at hand, I seize the moment. Red beans and rice it is!

Consider allowing yourself to stray from your routine for various reasons:

You might need a change of pace. While I’m not usually one for naps, they can be a welcome respite after babysitting my grandchildren. Alternatively, when work frustrations arise, a brisk walk can serve as a refreshing reset.

Spontaneity can be exhilarating. It’s not just about switching up dinner to red beans and rice; perhaps a surprise date night is in order! Or consider your reading habits—while I might be deep into a classic, a light chic lit book could offer a refreshing change of pace.

Sometimes, it's a matter of necessity. There are days when illness strikes or when a loved one requires our attention. During such times, it’s perfectly acceptable to pause your routine.

Remember, routines can become constricting if you let them.

Do not feel guilty if you miss completing every task on your list. You can always return to your routine the next day, and it will feel gratifying when you do.
